Learning is a lifelong process. It is a process of trial and error. We win some we loose some. Take the good with the bad and with that, you get LIFE.
To get where we are today in regards to technology, learning on demand is the way to go. I am a big proponent of online learning. I just find it amazing to see how far we have come in the last ten years or so.

John has a really good perception of the modern day work place. I am in the process of working in a new office with new team members and we are already doing learning on demand. I love that new term; I will keep that in my vocabulary.

Another arena when it comes to working with a group is that they understand the bigger picture and have time to step back and look at the small components. By doing this individuals have a better idea how they fit into the big picture even though it may be one small portion. I feel today many of us are self learners and we are willing to take that extra time to research whatever subjects we want to know. The Internet makes it so easy to access all types of information.

Patience is what its all about and a great attribute to have. Annette, sometimes it helps when take a step back and look at the smaller components first before you look at the grand scheme of things. Patience is a well desired attribute in leadership but sometimes not practiced at all. Which is unfortunate in today world.

The workplace is yet another culture that is changing all the time. And when technology is introduced to the office, it divides the group into two camps. There are those whom embrace it, and implement it in their work routines, and there are others whom work around it and simply refuse to understand it. Management needs to get these two groups together and collaborate their learning and teach each other.

John in many ways is saying exactly the same thing IBM preaches vis-a-vis technology. That is, in the work place ... the truly successful workplace ... it is through technology that we are interconnected. Important? Yes! It is through the interconnection of the social fabric we learn.

I really want to share this article by IBM as to how technology plays and will play such an important role in the life an organization. Again, courtesy of IBM.

Paddy, I agree with you. It stresses the importance of creating a culture in the workplace that promotes life long learning.

As time changes, so does technology for the better. In the work place the current software or sytem in place needs to be consistent to meet the needs of the office and of the people. In my prior job I was involved with implementing the current system in place. However, many do not like change. Especially when it comes to technology. As this was happened there were 3 groups of people that dived the staff: some said "why fix it if it is not broken", another group that could go either way, and the final group that was excited that the office was finally updating the system for the better. With this being said something needs to happen. As this divides the office, upper management needs to bring these groups together so that they can work and learn together as some are visual learners and others learn best by following procedures. This will allow the office as a whole to become optimistic about change.

The internet brings such connectivity and accessibility. It allows you to look up almost anything you want to learn at the tip of your hands for "instant learning" opportunities. This indeed is a great benefit.

I would have to agree with you Vanessa. I think that having the internet especially in the workplace is incredibly helpful. I know that at my job in particular, if I didn't have the internet at my fingertips I would not be able to look up valuable resources for my clients that they are in need of and not provide them with the tools they need. It's quicker and faster then calling people out of the phonebook.

Brown brings up some interest points. One that comes to mind is the social community. Often times, these communities such as Facebook and Myspace, get a bad rap, but instead they are excellent avenues to share information with people across the world. I believe overtime, we see more and more businesses, organizations, etc, utilize online communities. What do you think?

I like what John Seely Brown had to say about how we learn and how easy it is to find information today. We go out there and "do stuff." When we get stuck we have a wealth of knowledge via the internet and experience via our social community to learn more and move forward. I hope you're getting to "do stuff" today instead of just collecting a body of knowledge.
